Twelve Mile 500 Lawnmower Race Information

The Twelve Mile LIONS finalized the rules for the 46th annual Twelve Mile 500 4th of July riding lawnmower race. Following are the rules for the 2008 race. The only change last year was the placement of the kill switch. (See rule # 1) We now require the kill switch to be on the chassis or body of the mower and not the steering wheel or bars. We will also be checking the dead man throttle operation closely.

We had a great race last year and will still be watching the mower speeds closely to insure safety for drivers and fans. We moved the starting time back half an hour last year to allow for spectators to see the whole race after the parade ends.

You must supply your own lap judge and I would encourage you to explain the process to them before the race. This is an important job and more difficult than most people imagine. (I say this from experience!!) If you do not have a judge, you will not race. We will notify the local newspapers with the qualification results and the position you will have for the race.

Please fill out the posted entry/safety inspection form and mail it back to us at your convenience, or we will accept entry forms and payment on qualification day and on race day. Below are this year’s important dates and times to remember. As always, please call me or a fellow club member with any questions you may have about this year’s race. See you at the track! All times below are subject to change.

Sunday, June 8th
    * Qualification day 1-4 pm at Plank Hill Park, Twelve Mile, IN

  Sunday, June 15th

    * Rain date for qualifications 1-4 pm

 Friday, July 4th
    * 9:00 am park opens
    * 10:30 pm racers can pick up shirts at Little League Building
    * 12:30 pm deadline for additional race entries
    * 1:30 pm Briggs Race
    * 3:30 pm Modified Race

PS Drivers ask us each year, why do I have to pay at the gate when I am racing? The Lions have tried to keep entry fees as low as possible to encourage entries in the race. We pay prize money to 10 places in each race and supply t-shirts for each team. Our policy is that everyone pays to get in, fans, driver, vendor, and even the LIONS members working that day. We have tried several things including passes but none of them worked very well. We thought the best approach was to treat everyone the same. This is our main fundraiser for the year and we use our profits for community projects.

We want your opinions on our race and encourage you to think about joining the Lions club to help with improving our annual event.
